Firestone Air Chief 4-A-20
 

I've got this Firestone Air Chief 4-A-20 AM/Shortwave radio that's been sitting down in the basement for far too long. Perhaps someone here could use it for parts or fix it up. It is complete and unrestored. The cabinet is pretty rough so it'd need some new veneer so it'd take some work but it could be done. Anyway, if anyone wants it, you can have it for the cost of shipping, just let me know. Thanks.

glad someone got this. I fixed up one of these a few months ago. A nice performing larger table radio, and it even boasts a little shortwave tuning as well.

Close to 20 years ago, I bought one of these for $10 at an antique store. I fixed it up and it was a fine performer but it's one of those radios that I actually don't remember what happened to it. You'll have a nice one there when you get it fixed up.

If that missing part of the veneer on top was in a less conspicuous place I might try to patch it. Looks like a total new piece for the top would be the way to go. Who knows. I haven't seen the rest of it yet. I prefer sets with challenges, they take longer, there are more things to figure out. I had a look at the schematic on NostalgiaAir and it's an AA6 series string set with an RF stage and 3 gang tuning condensor (we'll call it that instead of a capacitor since she's so elderly, pre-1948 per NostalgiaAir) so should work well as reported above, as long as I feed her 60 cycles, not Hz. :D From the style I would have said 1940-41. Maybe they had leftover cabinets after The War to use up.

EDIT: 4/4/10 -- I still haven't seen this set and sure would like to work on it.

Radio arrived today! Thanks, Matt; you really did a good job of packing it double boxed and with lots of peanuts in between the boxes, no damage at all done by UPS. It's going to take work on everything but that's the kind of challenge I like. It's sidelined for now as I have work on the bench ahead of it, but when I do get to it later on I'll run a play-by-play here.
