1930s cathedral clock radio
 

I was nosing around ARF a few minutes ago, and noticed a thread discussing a 1930s cathedral radio with a clock that did not turn the radio on and off--just showed the time of day. On top of that, the clock had a wheel in back of the mechanism to start it when the set was initially plugged in after purchase or after a power outage. (I've done some reading on this type of clock and have learned that these were the forerunners of today's self-starting analog electric clocks.) I found myself wondering why any radio manufacturer would put an ordinary clock in a cathedral set; after all, I don't think clock radios in which the clock operated as a "time switch" to turn on the radio at a preset time were even thought of until the late 1940s. :scratch2:

Atwater Kent made two radios in 1935 (models 509 and 511-I have both) that would not only turn the radio on and off at preset times, but change preselected stations.
