Philco model 401 radio from New Zealand

Just got this from New Zealand, off the Australian ebay. Runs off of 240VAC, has a power transformer, uses 4 tubes: ECH42, EAF42, EL41 and EZ40. It works fine on 240VAC@60Hz and it picks up the local stations around New York City, here in northern NJ.
The dial has New Zealand radio station callsigns, like they do in Australia, and packard Bell did this with their radios for the west coast of the USA.

Nice find! It looks to be in incredibly good shape, too. I've really grown to like the look of the 1940's-era bakelite radios. When it cracks, it's a headache... but when it's in good shape, it usually shines up like new and is a lot easier to deal with than refinishing a wood case.

That Philco is a long way home! Those sets used to be everywhere at one point, I even had one along time ago! They are good performers, but would suggest replacing some of the capacitors in it though..:)

Cheers

Here's a picture of this radio's power (mains) plug. Looks like they anticipate a shortage of outlets in homes in New Zealand, so the radio plug allows the user to plug in piggyback whatever gets displaced by the radio's power plug.

Yep thats commonly know here as a 'tap on' plug, these are no longer made but still very handy and yes you are right alot of older homes built in NZ did have a severe lack of power points, don't know why, just the way it was back then.
Cheers
Glen
