I'm starting a new theme!


I just acquired the missing link to all my test gear: a Sony Trinitron SSM-14N5U video monitor! Pretty cool set; it's got on-screen menus, selectable PAL/SECAM/NTSC (with or without comb filter) decoders built right in, and different jacks in the back so I can hook it up in different ways.

That means I have all the gear I need to align and test color TV's now, and since the wife was nice enough to buy me shelving, I finally have a way to organize it. On the shelves are the B&K bar gen, Eico sweep gen, Sony reference monitor, Tek O-Scope, RCA Isotap trasformer, soldering iron, and all the various hand tools of the trade. Not a bad way to spend 1kw of power (when all the receivers are on, anyway). Powered up showing NTSC bars are the monitor, the CTC-7 and the recent Philco hybrid roundie acquisition. Off to the side is the CTC-4, awaiting purity assembly or a better CRT (might have an AXP on the way).

OMG!!! how can you possibly work in such a well organized and clean environment. Real techs do it the old fashioned way, we work in a constant state of well organized confusion as shown below....

Parts parts parts and more parts. The biggest thing I learned from John Folsom is that you can never have enough spare parts.

at least you've got some room to do it! I'm working out of a 10 x 14 Bedroom, and I have to store all my parts in there too!

Can't wait for a bigger house......

Yeah, I fully agree. My basement is full of valuable, important, [HA!!!] vintage TVs and other cool electronic stuff collected from everywhere and possibly from other members of this list. All my work is therefore done in more convenient and easily reachable areas of the house...

Well, at least, is all the ductwork too low so you Conk your Noggin on it every 2nd or 3rd time you pass it, like it is in my basement ?!? ONE more row of Cinderblocks when they built this dam house woulda made a WORLD of difference...But maybe people were shorter in 1946 than they are now, too...(grin)

I just went to this estate sale today, bought a couple book shelves for my own basement, but they don't come much bigger than this one here. This is the basement of a ranch home built in '73. Imagine having 3200 square feet like this for your TV shop. Everyone who set foot down there was awe struck. I was too...

About a year ago I moved into a 'senior' apartment that's all of 500 sq. ft.

A 6-by-6-ft. walk-through closet holds my workbench and Philco TV-123. I like to restore then fire-up individual circuit functions as much as practical. The 3.58 oscillator and cw amp are shown pumping out about 3 and 12 Vp-p respectivly. First time they operated in 46 years.

Two of the three sets I have are on display in a corner of the living room along with a 7.1 home theater setup. My operational CT-100 fits into a corner of the bedroom.

Cramped but functional.
