weird tubes
 

Picked up a box lot of tubes this weekend, found some weird ones...anybody know what these were used for? I think the large one is military.

The one on the left looks like a traditional driver amp tube for HF operation. Perhaps a amateur radio guy here in the forum can tell you about it. The one on the right reminds me of some tubes used in avionics back in the 50's - the screw lugs were a method of firmly securing the tube in the chassis, as opposed to a socket where it might work loose. We had a radar for the old Constellation aircraft that some admiral used that had those tubes. The radar was non-functional, just there for weight and balance. To keep things honest, they pulled the radar for it's 108-day inspection, sent it to us, where we looked it over for corrosion, loose items, and other discrepancies, fixed those gripes, but never powered it on for testing. It was just there for the ride!

Either way, both tubes are quite limited in use, or to apply some PC language "Special" :D

The one on the right is some kind of a mercury thyratron, used in a DC motor drive. The one on the left is a low power transmitting tube, possibly military.
