Kutztown finds

Picked this majestic up saturday at kutztown for a buck!!! All there, but the grill cloth and speaker looked like a victim of a screwdriver. Cabinet in very nice condition, just some howards should be fine. The speaker is ripped in several spots, so I decided this one needs a recone. Ordered 2 cones yesterday, will post progress on the reconing.

Case in fact

Wow.. that's a nice looking case! U found a real steal! Speaker looks like another prime subject for a "re-cone".

Any more pics? Me like'em pics!

 BUZZ

I have near completed the reconing. First step was to measure from the spder to the top of the cone, and the spider diameter, to find a sutiable replacement. Next was removing the felt over the screws, then the screws and retaining ring. Then unsolder the leads to the voicecoil.

Next was to take out the screw holding the spider on. Here sometimes you have to be careful if the spider is made out of cardboard, which this one was.
Then you can lift the entire cone out at this point. Then according to the voice coil size, you either remove all the old paper from the voice coil, or leave some sourrounding it, to match the cone opening.
The new cone I selected turned out to be a higher profile than needed, but the voice coil opening was perfect. So I removed all the paper from the voice coil. Next I drilled a hole in my bench top, where I could stick a pencil in, and put the point of it thru the spider opening, then set the new cone over the voice coil assembly, centered it, and glued. Left sit overnight.

The next day, I checked the fit. The cone was too high. So I removed the rubber surrounding the cone, and flipped it. This gave me about a 1/4 inch drop. You want the cone to be close to flush to the top of the frame as possible. If the cone sticks out over the top, you will force the voicecoil to bottom out, and if it is too short, your voicecoil will not engage correctly.
Once I seen flipping the rubber surround will put the cone closer to where it was suppose to be, I glued it and left sit overnight.

If the new cone protrudes too far from the speaker frame, besides the good fix you did, another one would be to build up the gasket that goes between the frame and the baffle board, to give the cone room to operate. Good detail on your report!

After checking the fit, I secured the steel ring that holds the top of the cone on. I used 3 screws for now. I soldered the voicecoil wires back on the transformer. I got good voicecoil movement and no binding. Next step is to put the remaining screws in, and recap the radio and hook the speaker back up. I did check it with a battery to make sure it will work.

I started working on the chassis the other day, but I'm missing 2 tubes so could not go forward. I did find a mouse nest under the chassis. I got the cones off of a vendor on ebay.
