Fun Philco 54-1423 find

As found, for $20 in a hannibal, MO antique store:

Was told that the turntable worked but the radio didn't. No stylus in the TT.

After about 20 minutes of lovin:
I freed up the radio tuning with a dab of oil at the right places.

Since it was plugged in recently (within the last 6 mos), I gave it a quick variac (over a minute or so) and the turntable spun, sounded like it needed a new idler, the autofunctions seemed to work okay, if a tiny bit sluggish, but no radio. No sound, no nuthin. Recap time!

Looks like it's been partially recapped in recent memory, as well....

Do the tubes light? Is there plate voltage?

That's a nice-looking cabinet and in great shape. Philco skimped on the speaker, though. If it were mine when I got it going, I'd look at cutting a new mounting board and mounting a 6 x 9" or 5 x 7" speaker. Looks like one or the other would fit.

Not sure yet. Will dig into it later this week once I get all the caps necessary to recap it.

I agree. I might just do an external speaker or an internal one just sitting in there.

That is a nice find. What store did you find that in? I am only bout 18 miles from Hannibal?

Really elegant "Machine Age" type design...

Worked on one of those. Changer design is pretty bullet proof. I think it uses little flat rubber belts to drive various sized pulleys to change speed. Electronics package is a bit crammed, but is you basic 5 tube transformerless design.

I strongly suggest the use of an isolation transformer - especially if you're doing any live troubleshooting with test instruments.
