I'd think it's more so you can have the channel changer/tuning chassis next to the couch and the screen across the room... earliest remote control :D

Just for the record there actually were eairlier "remotes" than that. That Philco predicta Tandem(not penthouse) is form arround 1960. Zenith had the first wireless TV remote (the flashmatic) in 1954, and they had wired remotes (such as the "lazy bones") years earlier.
There were also radio consoles with wired, and wireless remotes in the 30's and 40's (for example the Philco "mystery control" models).

If I was anywhere near there, I would be super-tempted as well (if I had the money); the price is very reasonable for that model.
