Need a capacitor scrounge
I used to shop at justradios for my cap needs. Ide send dave a list, hed translate and make nessasary subs, and quote me a price and ship them.
Lately, he just points me to the shopping cart and nothing more... So i find myself stuck with a list and in need of someone who can translate my cap needs and help me get a cap order together :) Calling all CAP gurus, i am in need of your assistance... Thanks.. Steve |

What are you looking for? If you want a list for a particular set, I can't do that. But I can surely help with your needs. Also, I deal with DigiKey and Mouser. Lightning fast shipping and reasonable price. But it is rather difficult (at times) to find what you need. Let us know your wants/needs... |
Gonna have to post this in pieces. tried to paste it but it all ran together...
Here are some HV caps from an RCA t100 series KCS38 set .047 @ 1000v .039+ - 10% @ 1000v .018+ - 10% @ 1000v .01 @ 1000v Yellow axials or orange drops will do |
Here are the electrolytics:
40 @ 500v ---- (6) 10 @ 250v ----(2) 20 @ 450v ----(3) 100 @ 100v ---(2) 80 @ 450v ----(2) 20 @ 150v ---(2) 5 @ 50v ----(2) |
Here are some of the common ones yellow axials or drops @ 630 Volts
.47 ----(6) .1 -----(8) .001 --(4) .03 ---(3) .01 ---(5) .02 ---(5) .05 ---(6) .04 ---(2) .25 ---(4) .047 --(3) .003---(2) .015---(2) .0022--(3) .22 ----(3) .0047--(6) .022 -- (2) ( * )= quantity theres the whole list of them.. need subs and a grand total Thanks Steve |
Two things that will help you "translate" your list your self. 1. that the replacements can be rated for a higher voltage than the originals and. 2. that if you wire two caps in paralel their MFD capacitance values will be added to gether (this helps when there are not any available values that are close enough to work), and if you cant find values that add up to the desired value then look for two that are double the proper value and wire them in series to get the proper value.
I learned these tricks from an ARRL hand book which had some very useful formulas in it , and they work well when one can't get the right values of caps (or when one can't afford the right values and has TONS of the wrong values lying about unused). Tom C. |
Also remember that many older capacitor values, like .05 mfd., are not commonly available: .047 would replace .05. In the vast majority of circuits where paper caps were used, pick the modern cap closest to the value of the old cap. In reality, the old caps were rated within 20% high or low from the marked value, and .047 is only about 6% off from .05, and besides, the original could have been off from .05 and could have been as low as .04 or as high as .06 when it was made.

.015 or .02 will replace the .018 ,,,, .039 something close like .04 or .035 or .033 ..... my sams doesn't show any electrolytics rated at 500 volts , highest is 450 volts and i've restored a couple of these sets and highest i saw was 450 volts.

I apreciate the conversions you guys have gave me, it means alot, but i need someone who can translate my list and give me a quote on a price order at MOUSER. so i can send them a M.O. and get my caps shipped.. 5 units depend on this list
Help me out if ya can :D Steve |
Still need assistance... my list at 630v is the standard im used to with dealing with Dave, all his drops are rated at that voltage to cover alll volts below 630. Dont know if mouser does this or other places. I admit im a bit cap dumb and Shopping cart checkout dumb as well :D
Other than that, still got some projects on hold since Feb of this year.. Your help is needed and much appreciated :D Thanks.. Steve |
Annother idea to help you help your self, if the site has a search button try to limit the voltage range to what you need and the approximate value. The web is easy as are most sites. If you keep playing arround and pushing buttons, and making observations you'll figure it out. Have confidence and take the time to learn/teach yourself and you will be surprised at what you can accomplish.
if you can figure out how to become a member of this site you can oder capacitors online. Tom C. Tom C. |
...and if you are searching at Mouser, the search engine responds well to search terms like "radial," "axial," "film," "aluminum" (for electrolytics) and both voltages and values.
You can usually narrow it down to less than a dozen or so caps - Be sure to check the "stocked" box. Just for example, searching on " .47uf 630V radial polyester film" yields several pages of parts. Checking the "stocked" box and searching again narrows it down to just 8 parts. Beware of sticker shock - the difference is quality (Nichicon, Panasonic, CDE) vs the chinese caps Dave sells. Allied sells the Illinois Capacitor brand, which I prefer for quality and solderability (long leads!), but their search function is not as easy to navigate. Illinois Capacitor makes both film axials (MPW series) and radials (MSR series), and they have axial electrolytics (TT series) too. I order the film caps by thee 100's, but try to order only what I need of the electrolytics. Less cost than Mouser, but still pricier than the chinese caps. I also like Sprague Orange Drops, but get them only for certain values I don't already have, and I get them locally from a dealer that has a small stock. Hope this helps, |
Thanks for all the input, i admit to being a bit overwhelmed by the list they have at mouser. and yes i did ramp up the voltage on the E caps to 500v in some cases due to the fact the sparton i have has 475volt e caps..
And the high voltage caps in my first list are for an RCA t100 series set i got off the BAY and now i see why all caps BUT those are done in the tv. Anyone here deal with one of those sets and could pass on how they tackled them? Thanks again for the input.. :) Steve |
The Search Engine for Mouser is excellent - IF you know what you're doing. It allows you to exactly tailor thier stock to your needs.
Mouser also has detailed specs on all their stuff. Good to know when you're comparing seemingly identical caps, etc. Some have higher operating temp ranges and longer lifespans for pennies more (or less, sometimes). You're just going to have to get used to their system search. It is NOT hard. Just use the search engine to narrow down your choices. As far as Tubulars are concerned, I use pretty much one source: Just Radios. They have a simple list with most of the "Pre War" values I use for the sets I restore (1946-50). Whatever tubulars or micas I can't get there I get at Mouser. Check out the tall, narrow radial Electrolytics made by Panasonic and Nichicon over at Mouser. They fit in multi-section cans and are rated up to 105 degrees C. |
Thanks M3-STR8 and fellow restorers :)
I'll probably have dave fill the easy caps then i'll battle these odd caps.. Cant have thes sets lying around much longer... :) Steve |
