Grandparents Philco
 

I was visiting my Grandmother last week. I brought my son along because he had not seen Great-Grandma for quite awhile. While I was there she was digging thru some things and found the receipt for their first TV.

It was 1955. Total cash price was 249.95 from Casey & Obrien in Madison Wi. 24 monthly installments of 9.74.

Model number was 4013. I tried looking for photos of it but did not have any luck as of yet. I looked on the net and have not had luck finding that model either. Anyone have a pic??

She also told me about the first time she saw a tv. She was walking by a bar I think it was in Deforest Wi. Sometime during WWII and saw a flicker in the window. She had heard they had a tv so she peeked in the window to see the new wonder. she said "Oh, so thats tv." She started hearing water on the window awning but it was not raining. So she stepped away and looked up. some guy was pissing out the upstairs window onto the awning. So it was a very memorable introduction to TV. :lmao:

Uhh, yeah, I bet that was...Hope she didn't get "Christened". How old is she now ?

hahaha No she didn't luckily. I'm bad at remembering birthdays but my figuring she is almost 85. She put off having her 2nd hip replaced till this last winter. All went well with that. She is getting around a lot better now. She should have done that years ago. Her knees are bothering her now.

85 ? Ha. Spring chicken. My dad's mom died in 202, she was 104. My mom's mom died in '92, she was almost 103. My dad's father checked out early, in '89, he was 94. Smoked like a chimney all his life.

There is a model 22C4013. I pulled the Sams (276-7), it is dated 5-55, the set on the cover is model 22C4119. I've had a few similiar Philco sets from 55-56, and still have a table model. It is buried in the attic so I can't check the model number right now.

Sandy-Yeah she gets around pretty good for popping out 15 kids.

Ok, I have never been clear on this... we have all seen "prewar sets" and "postwar" sets. I believe that no sets were manufactured during WWII, due to material shortages, but did some television broadcasting actually continue during the war years? :scratch2:

I believe WABD, channel 5 in NYC, owned by Dumont, was on the air during the war, but don't know the extent of the on-air time. May have been others.

I'll ask her again about it. It wont be for awhile tho. More than likely I am sure it was just post war.
