Bought another Aussie radio, the Tasma baby

This one made around 1947, and a popular model in the Aussie radio collecting community. The little map of Australia is a nice touch. It uses a 6A8 converter, an EBF2GT IF amp and detector, and an EL33 audio power output, and 5Y3 rectifier.

It is quite happy with American 240V@60Hz, as transformers made for 50Hz are oversized for 60Hz, and run quite cool. I have a few obsolete Hubbell brand 3 pin outlets, with the UL seal of approval, which turn out to have the same pin pattern as the Aussie outlet, to power my small collection of Aussie radios.

Oddly enough, this radio has no internal power switch, the maker used an inline power cord switch for that.

I believe Down Under all the wall outlets are or were at one time switched so this scheme leaves no juice in the appliance when they are turned off at the wall. The inline switch may not have been factory supplied?

Found the schematic. It works quite well even without the audio driver triode usually found in AA5s.

Amazing - an Aussie set that doesn't use a 6J8 as the converter. I was overwhelmed recently when looking for design ideas as there were many aussie schematics online and the 6J8 outnumbered the 6A8.

I replaced the dial lights (which look to have been #40's, screw threads) with some bulbs I got at radio shack, 7.2V @225ma for flashlights. These are physically smaller, and thus are no longer too close to the plastic disc that holds the pointer. The old bulbs were the elongated shape, like #47's except for the screw base. These new bulbs make for more even distribution of light (still not that even, the top of the dial is still brighter than the bottom), and being 7.2V instead of 6.3V should make the bulbs last longer.
