high voltage and yoke

hi all just a bit curious about this motorola color set from 66 it works great and color is great but i was never able to figure out why the hv is low and when i got the set some of the bottom of picture was missing along with the left side was short and a bit twisted but was able to adjust all of it out and lower the bright for a good pic, adjustments are at there limits. working on this set i noticed upon turn on the outter edges in one area of the yoke winding would fizzle and little bits of glowing as it warmed up but went away when the hv came up i am wondering if this may indicate a slight short in the yoke preventing full hv and and messing up the twisted left side as well as the vert height. i had removed the yoke and cleaned where it was arcing and it didnt do any of it again.or could it have been some sort of static because it would show alittle smoke. the crt is grounded to the chassis. if the yoke has maybe only 1 winding shorted could this ruin the hv as well as the geometry of the picture on the left causing the pic to twist.:scratch2:

is it possible to use a 90 degree yoke or 94-110 degree in place of the original 92 degree yoke, maybe if it can be wired?

You can probably use a 90 degree yoke from an Admiral or one of the 23" RCA clones. It'll take a bit of re-engineering, as the Motorola had a lot of connections coming out of it. You'd have to compare the two schematics. The Motorola and the one from the donor set.

Motorola did everything a little different. I wouldn't try interchange anything on that set. I doubt it would work right.

well i guess ill look for an original somewhere out there, moyers dont even have it and no one made this in aftermarket either. weird set, nothing aftermarket.

There wasn't that many of those sets around. I think that set was the last of the production run. The yokes and the flybacks seldom failed, so there was no point in building after-market parts. I have to look at the schematic and see how much difference there is.

did you read the post above about what i had found with the arcing and low hv i am not sure this is the problem but willing to find out, of course without burning the set up,lol, lol. this really is a different set by itself.

i found 2 90 degree yokes on ebay one for admiral and a zenith and is also for others but says 19 inch crt and the mh matches as well mine is horiz 12mh vert 24 the other one for the 19 inch is horiz 12mh vert 23mh weather this makes much difference i dont know or even if the hole for the neck would fit.

I did read the post and there's a strong possibility that's part of the problem. I only worked on a few of those sets, years ago and the problems were simple. I think that problem would have me going in circles.

The 19 & 23" yokes should be the same physically, as long as they're out of a tube set, they should be compatable.

timmy 11-22-2011 12:37 PM

well i think i looked at everything so far and this is why i thought it may be the yoke because of what it may do when bad or partly bad and yes i already ran in circles. the set does work nice but it really cant stay like this with the controls turned all the way to one side and leaves no room for anymore error.the yokes i seen on ebay were in an old thordarson box and the other was i think merit.

that twack, maybe if you could find a simpl to fix rca or clone set part and repair would come easyr. i have lots and if u live closer i would hook you up but its to far.

timmy 11-22-2011 04:14 PM

lol,yes i wish things were alittle more simple but then the challenge would not be there and this motorola is for sure a challenge.
