16" Emerson Roundie.

I just got back with this set, a CL find, I've seen these on eBay before but I thought they were a 12" set.
Anyone know the model number of this one, it's out in the Van and I don't feel like going out there and pulling the back off again to find it. Seller was asking $89 for it but I checked the CRT and it's really really bad. Bumping the heater didn't budge the needle at all, also he had plugged it in, before I got there and something smoked, I could smell it in the house as soon as I walked in (and also in the Van all the way home, p.u.) hopefully a resistor and not the transformer, which was still warm when I arrived. Anyhow I got it for $25, hopefully I can find a 16GP4 metal tube for it someday, the set is complete with all the knobs and the back at least. It's pretty compact for a 16" Tabletop, I wonder if Ingraham had a hand in the cabinet design, I know Emerson had a few Radios with Ingraham cabinets and possibly one 10" TV set. The cabinet is solid but the finish is shot, also the thick veneer behind the knobs is torn up on one end, an easy fix if I ever get around to doing it. |
Just found out this has an Ingraham cabinet, took off he back and there was the tag, glued in the corner.
I also found out the 5U4 was cracked from the heat and the heater arced to the plate, it still stinks too, I really hope the transformer isn't damaged. What's really frustrating is the seller caused this damage by plugging it in after I was on my way to pick it up, guess he thought it would sell better if it was working. |
Good luck. I've had the same experience with sellers too many times :(

I almost count it as a blessing anymore when I see that the line cord is a rotted mess, so the seller has no temptation to plug an old set in.
There was an online auction recently where the seller plugged in a twin rectifier tube set, and wrote something like "I watched the first tube glow purple and then sparkle, and then it stopped. Then the second tube did the same thing. Now nothing happens when I plug it in." |
I can help with a crt , I have a couple of spares.
|
I had the same problem with my 54 RCA. They had plugged it in prior to me arriving. "It had sound but no picture. It was only on for 10 minutes". One rectifier tube was blown to bits inside! I'm 90% sure the transformer is shot. B+ way too high and I can feel a shock if I touch the transformer's case. Not a good sign.

Well I fooled around with the CRT some more tonight.
Seems it has a bad connection, or a short, either inside the neck or hopefully, at the socket. I put it in my Conrac Monitor chassis to give it some more HV, it behaved the same as it did in a 10" chassis, Raster, no brightness control and no video information. Tapping the neck caused it to quit altogether, very dim raster. Soldered the pins and still no picture. Put it on the Tester and started tapping, it suddenly went to the high end of good (pegged it actually) readjusted the G2 setting and checked again and it now tests like a new CRT! How long this will last is anyones guess, till it cools of perhaps, is the problem inside or at the socket, I don't know at this point but darn it has a nice picture right now. |

Resurrecting this old thread because I now have an excellent CRT for this set.
I bought it from Mrozarka on eBay, it arrived yesterday packed to perfection and testing like a NOS tube. Lucky it came with the insulator, I stepped on mine and broke it so it got tossed. It's the right insulator so this tube may have come from an Emerson. I'll need to find some knobs for it, they were all busted up on the shaft ends, these Emersons are fairly common (not this particular one but ones with the same knobs) so hopefully I can find some. The set has been sitting in my garage since 2011 in pieces, cabinet is stripped and it needs a new piece of veneer across the lower front panel, it'll be a while before I get started on it but at least it's do-able now. |
That's good news Eric. Did you locate the model#?
