ultimate CRT book

We know of Radiotron Designer's Handbook: F. Langford-Smith ... - the volume describing the details of vacuum tubes in great detail.

Was there ever published a book dealing in the same detail with the design and making of CRTs, both electromagnetic and electrostatic types?

There was a 1962 manual called "Electron Tube Design" put together by RCA, which was not meant for public release, but was intended for internal use in training new engineers in their tube manufacturing operations. There are several chapters on CRT theory and manufacturing techniques, both for television and oscilloscope types. Hardbound original copies are pretty rare and expensive (estate sales from former RCA employees are about the only source), but it is now available online in various formats here:

This is a KILLER reference for the serious tube geek! Covers every kind of tube that RCA made, from ordinary receiving types through camera tubes, industrial and broadcast power tubes, microwave tubes, and of course CRTs.

Another great reference specific to CRTs is "The Cathode-Ray Tube: Technology, History and Applications", by Peter Keller. A bit pricey via Amazon, but AFAIK still available directly from the author a bit cheaper.

The big red tube book - I have this somewhere, a very good reference. I d/l the PDFs just to be sure!

e-mail sent. hope Mr. Keller has a copy left!

I also asked Mr. Keller if he has datasheets for Tektronix CRTs. I am using a NOS tube from a 545 as a built-in modulation scope on the "Colonel Tucker" AM ham transmitter being restored and upgraded in my lab at the present. I got all the CRT operating voltages from the manual by looking at the schematic. It would be great to find a databook or collection of sheets. I have many TEK and other electrostatic CRTs that need to be used.

If anyone has an interest in knowing about the several P4 phosphors as well as others (or just collects obsolete info), see my hobby research document at magnetosphere.net The real credit goes to those who wrote the documents listed in the bibliography.

I bought Peter Keller's book. It's great! Well worth the cost. He's a very helpful and knowledgeable gentleman.

He was/is a member, I think.
