This Muntz TV is the first I've seen since the sixties, when one of my neighbors in my home town had a 21" console. They, like almost everyone else in the neighborhood at the time, also had a large chimney-mounted antenna (this was years before my neighborhood had cable).
Muntz TVs had almost bare-bones signal circuits (in addition to a minimalist design in general), which meant the sets did not work well in anything other than moderate to strong signal areas unless large, high-gain antennas were used. I grew up in a Cleveland suburb about 35 miles from the stations' transmitters, which meant that even for good black-and-white reception a good antenna was almost a must. Where I live today, a Muntz TV (in the old NTSC analog era) would need a very good outdoor antenna to get any kind of reception at all, as this area is perhaps 40 miles from the stations.
I doubt if a Muntz set would work at all with a DTV converter box fed by an indoor antenna; if it did, the performance would probably be so-so or worse (read nonexistent). I tried antenna reception on my analog TVs when I moved here almost 13 years ago and could not even get the NBC affiliate in Cleveland; the other stations, except CBS channel 19, were fair to poor at best. Digital reception here on an antenna is much better, but I still do not get two stations that are on VHF DTV channels.
BTW, I agree as far as the bananas are concerned; they are being used far too much in posts to this forum. Once in a while (for a touch of humor) is OK, but the extent to which they have appeared here lately, IMO, borders on the ridiculous.
