Philco T45-124

I didn't expect to ever be posting in this forum, but I couldn't pass up on this nifty little Philco radio from 1959. It has four transistors and a detector diode.

Does anyone have service info for it ?

I sure hope those cool looking transistors are good

I found the schematic in Beitmans vol. 20. You can download all the Beitmans here for free :D http://makearadio.com/beitmans/index.php

Great photos Bob. I just watched your un-boxing of this radio and it looks fantastic. These little radios are my true love.

Just like tube radios, it's usually the electrolytic caps that need to be replaced. They tend to dry out and lose capacitance. The transistors are likely good.

That's what I was hoping to hear

I've seen early transistors before but they looked more like these. I guess they were European or Japanese.

Those are genuine Philco transistors. They made their own at the time.
I have one of those heavy front, early 60's GE AM-FM portables, that uses Philco transistors in the IF stages. They must've been better. :thmbsp:
I think their semiconductor plant was phased out, when Ford started restructuring. :sigh:

I just looked up the schematic in Beitmans. I shows two different codes. Code 126 shows jedec type numbers and code 124 shows the Philco types.
The print shows some kind of a reflex circuit for the second IF.
Also, the transistor was rather critical in that circuit.

Looks like that set has a pretty long ferrite antenna. Bet it will hear a lot of stations once you get it going.

I hope to find out soon. New caps arrive Tuesday :)

It should be interesting to see how well it performs after restoration. :thmbsp:

Last night I decided to tackle this little radio. The biggest challenge turning out to be just getting the darn PCB out of the cabinet!

I had to carefully pry loose two tri-mount fasteners on the speaker side and unsolder a few wires going to the speaker and battery terminals before I could work it loose.

Most of the electrolytics are completely shot. This should measure 5uF not 216 pF!

Here it is recapped. I popped in some fresh AA batteries and t works just fine :D Next up I'll do a little alignment.

I finished the alignment and found the the 1st two IF coils were dead on, but the 3rd was pretty far off. Even so it was performing fairly well and is even better now :music:

I went over the cabinet with a little Novus #2 and am calling this project done :D
