A two Philco day!
 

It was a good (or bad depending) day to find vintage sets today.

First up, I bought the 48-1000 on eBay today, forgetting about another set I had bid on at a local silent auction.

Well I already knew I had been outbid on the local set and figured I'd just let it go but decided to stop by on the way home since it ended at 6:00pm today, thought if nothing else I could talk to the person who bought it and see if they wanted to sell the guts or if they were restoring it.

Turns out the price was still pretty low so I tossed in another bid slightly higher that what it was and I wound up getting it! :scratch2:

It's a 49-1240, turns out I already have one I got off Craigslist, I thought this was a different model but oh well, hopefully the CRT is good.

Took off the back and the base cap of the CRT is pretty busted up and loose, it was difficult to get the socket off without breaking anything but I did it.

The heater comes and goes when you wiggle the base, I think it's just bad solder on the pins, hopefully not a broken wire, it tested good after about a minute of warm up, not bad considering it's probably been sitting for decades.
After a couple minutes it checked excellent! At least I got my moneys worth out of the CRT if nothing else.

The two sets in the last picture are the Craigslist set on the left (no, it's not necked) and the set I got tonight on the right. The one on the left is much cleaner.

Nice haul! Perhaps the beginnings of a 3-D television project? ;)

That could work, just hook up two cameras, one to each TV then rig up some sort of eyepiece so you only see one screen with each eye.
If you go to that much trouble though might as well use a couple small modern Color sets.

You can never have too many 49-1240s. That was my first 1940s Philco and I honestly didn't expect much from it. (Not a lah-de-dah DuMont, and I have worked on some truly miserable Philco radios in the past.) But it has very respectable picture & sound, and after putting a super 12LP4 in mine, I'll have to keep it forever.

If you keep getting more and more 49-1240s, just line 'em up on a wall and hook each one to a different outdoor surveillance camera. Or, build something along these lines :)

Nice Haul Eric. Really like those two early model Philcos. I think Philco was on a path to make different looking sets early on.

Another nice find, Eric! And I hope that the 48-1000 arrives safely.

I'm personally fond of the Philco "consolettes." I restored a 49-1150 a few years back and I'm very impressed with the quality (photo attached).

Was that an actual set or an Artists conception?
It would probably use one tube with mirrors and lenses I imagine, but yes, it would be very easy to do today with flat screens, 50" HD 16:9 of course. :D

I know they supposedly aren't all that popular with "Collectors" (isn't that us?) but I like them too, they're compact and kind of cute looking.

It's one of my favorites too :yes: I'll get my 49-1040 done someday...

i have the 12" rounded screen or double D screen that has yet to be restored , a unique cabinet , never thought of it looking like a tv siting on a chair , always thought siting on a stand look.

I thought that set was clunky looking when I first got it, but now I've grown to like it.
