When they show you a picture of an amplifier that looks like something out of a power plant, and they mention the name Western Electric, you know to turn the page.

The AM-2 amplifier they describe uses:

2 x 300B rectifiers, 300B output tube.

Interesting tube that works both as an amplifier and rectifier...

That 300B is a Western Electric (design) triode power tube. Designed for audio output. Almost any audio output tube "could" be used as a rectifier. It was Western Electric design practice to use same tube as audio output and also as rectifier.

So it's not a typo! Amazing piece of info, never thought they would do that. I guess
a restorer might want to substitute some cheaper rectifier.

This Western Electric idea of using same tubes for rectifiers and outputs was from their theater amp days. Made for easier work in the field. In emergencies, tubes could be switched around. The show must go on, you know.
