do capacitors for old tv's need to be ul approved?
 

I'm thinking about getting involved with capacitors, and wondered if there needed to be a ul certification or does the manufacturer need to have a UL certification

They're not a government agency, so I don't think anything has to be UL approved.

Do you mean you're thinking about making capacitors, or just selling them in some form? I've often thought that if someone started making multi-section caps or offered a re-stuffing service there might be a few bucks to be made from hobbyist.

The only capacitors I have seen that carry a UL approval mark are so called "X" or "Y" rated safety capacitors typically used in line bypass applications.

If your set uses caps across the incoming AC line, or from line to chassis ground, you should be using these, rather than ordinary ceramic or film caps.
