Zenith chassis 5808
 

I got this in from a friend who picked it up gratis during a home inspection, a common thing he says since he is there, with a truck, with the owner, doing an inspection, near the "must-get-rid-of-it" terminus, looking into everything and coming across these items

The radio seem to be intact but I have not pulled the chassis yet. I'll do a complete recap on it.

This Zenith has had its field coil speaker removed and the baffle replaced by, what I can only guess, to be speakers someone had on-hand or could get nearby (ie; RadioShack)

The speaker wire is just cut clean, no connector

The questions are:

Did they modify the radio circuit to replace the inductor with a big resistor to use this crossover setup?

or

Did they just showcase the radio and use it as a ha ha cool speaker?

The Yamaha woofer is an "instrument speaker", Do guitar speakers use crossovers and tweeters? or does this say Hi Fi application?

I am looking at a Zenith field coil speaker on the bay as a replacement speaker and wonder. It has the 5 pin plug like my 5 pin socket

IS A ZENITH SPEAKER CONNECTOR AND FIELD COIL AND SPEAKER KIND OF INTERCHANGABLE?
I don't have this speaker but was wondering if it might be a replacement

There would have been an output transformer mounted somewhere as it's part of the speaker assembly too. Only four of the pins are used.

I'd pull the chassis and see what has been done before going any further and a three amp fuse is really too high of a value for this set and should be mounted someplace safer.

Is that the transformer mounted on that speaker in the picture

I'll correct that 1940 fuse installation and go 2 amp

Did the speaker in picture #3 come with the radio? If so, it looks like a P.M. type replacement speaker was used. It looks like the choke was mounted, where the output transformer should be mounted. The output transformer looks like it's behind the metal bracket mounted on the magnet housing. The original speaker should a 10" with a 1250 ohm field and a output transformer for a single 6F6 output.
Mount the fuse holder under the chassis. A 1.5 to 2 amp SB fuse should OK.
If the fuse should blow, you'll have to remove the chassis to investigate the cause anyway. :scratch2:

That speaker is a lot more promising than the setup you now have.
BTW, the speaker baffle looks like the original factory issue. It was removed and altered for the speakers installed. Also, the radio appears to be a model 8S463, ca1940.

I got the schematic from Radio Museum and a look at what the original speaker looks like

I'm thinking the new speakers were never intended to go with the radio, that the unit was used as a speaker box

The eBay speaker I was interested in is for a Zenith 8S463 which does NOT have a 6F6, which asserts that the speaker would not be correct

Whats the best thing to do to get the system up and running? Find a correct replacement?

If the speaker shown is reasonable enough, it's a good start.
It looks to have a choke and an output transformer, plus a 5 pin plug.
The cabinet looks to be great condition, which for me is a plus. :yes:

8-S-463's are "fairly" common and with a little time I'd bet a speaker will show up. Here's what you need..

I hate to put it aside but I am going to have to store it until I find a speaker
I still have to look under the chassis for capacitors and what not
