Flickering red in Sony KV-1311CR
 

After 20+ years of regular service, my beloved Sony KV-1311CR TV/monitor has developed a problem. It's like the red gun completely flickers out. Sometimes it comes back on in a flickering way, and then the picture is fantastic again. Adjusting user controls (Color, Hue, etc) has no obvious effect.

Is this a typical symptom that the CRT is giving up the ghost? I haven't hauled it back into the workshop to test the CRT yet.

This is the original CRT, so i guess it wouldn't be remarkable if it's finally dying. In that case, Where Oh Where would I look for replacement? It's such a perfect size for my office desk that I hate to give it up. About a year ago, I fixed a video problem by replacing some electrolytics.

The photo shows the TV when it was working properly. I just included it to give a general idea what model this is.

Resolder the 3 video outputs on the CRT board & check the
whole board for bad PC cons. That will fix 95% of em.

CRT unlikely, usually will short & go one color with retrace
lines then full shut down. Low emission is progressive. If
a Sony this age gets it the raster will flash on/off.

This is a good set, keep her going !

Thanks for the tip! The flickering does seem consistent with an intermittent connection.

Cleaning the CRT base pins might also help.

I think that TV uses the same CRT as my PVM, which looks nearly identical.

Sweet monitor, got to keep my eyes open for these in the free ads and the one thrift shop here that still carries CRTs.

You mean the little board that plugs onto the CRT base, right? (Board C in the Sams manual.)

Cleaning CRT pins didn't magically cure the flicker. I have begun checking the board. Haven't found any obvious bad connections yet, but it will take a while to go through this board.

Yup thats the board.

After checking & finding loads of good connections, I looked at that tiny pot labeled R BKG (background) and wondered if it might be a tad funky. I rocked it back and forth a little and returned it to the original position. Looks like our red is back.

I'll play it on the bench for a while to make sure the cure sticks.

I would love to keep this guy going. The CRT seems a little slower to light up than when it was new, but otherwise it's a pleasure to watch. I pipe the audio to a KLH bookshelf speaker, so it sounds swell, too.
