Lloyd's AM/FM/SW Japanese tube radio
 

Many people associate the Lloyd's brand with cheap solid state stereos and radios from the '70's and '80's; but, they did import some cheap tube radios during the '60's.

This radio looks to be from the early-to-mid '60's and is very long. The tubes are Toshiba-branded; but, I don't know if they actually built this radio. The radio has reception; but, the volume is very weak and distorted. So, it probably has leaky coupling capacitors in the audio circuit. Those old grey Japanese paper-in-oil capacitors are usually very leaky by now.

Nice radio. I've seen this model around before. These used to turn up fairly frequently at swap meets and such. I bet after new capacitors are installed, and the unit checked out, it will play quite well.

All those lights make me think FM stereo, but the chassis makes me think dual speaker mono.

It's not stereo. Those lights simply indicate which band you are on.

I've got its "Double-1st cousin" dual speaker, AM & 2 SW bands. Pretty decent little desk radio for the Ships' Radio Room for when I don't wanna fire up one of the big "Bacon fryers"...Gets WTAM 1100 in Cleveland exceptionally well, sometimes listen to "Ground Zero" & "Coast to Coast AM" before hittin' the hay... Can't remember the brand on mine, it may be a Lloyd's, too dam lazy to go look..

It doesn't claim "stereo", does it? I don't see enough tubes to provide a stereo decoder. I have an AM/FM radio that claims "balanced stereo speakers" even though it's just a pair of speakers fed by a mono signal.

No, it's a mono job with the speakers wired together. However, I have a similar JVC/Delmonico radio from the same time period that is a true FM stereo radio. I also have a similar Commodore "Stereo Matic Sound" radio that is simply a mono radio with the speakers wired together.

The speakers in that Lloyd's are better than most of those 60's Japanese sets, plus an earphone jack and shortwave as a bonus:thmbsp:and the tubes are Toshiba, but may be not indicative of the original manufacturer.

I had the same Commodore "stereo-matic" also, given by my 4th grade teacher as a bribe to stop "doodling on my tablet" and listen up. The tubes were labeled "Ten" which is Fujitsu. It had four 4 inch round speakers, sounding decent but the FM selectivity was awful.

Be careful you don't slobber on the radio, it's likely a hot chassis :nono:
