Console TV With Problem
 

I had a friend today tell me that their folks' Philco? not sure of brand Console TV went out and they were told it couldn't be fixed. He said it was something with the picutre. I guess sometimes it had a picture and then it wouldn't have a picture.

Does anyone know what this might be so I could let them for sure know about the fixability of it? I think they are like me and hate to part with it.

A screen shot of the problem or more detailed description would be needed to give an accurate diagnosis.

I can't give much help from the description; but, I will tell you that the "it can't be fixed" line is commonly used by shops who don't want to fix something. I can't tell you how many people have brought me items for repair after someone else told them that the item was beyond hope, only to find that the item only needed a simple repair.

used to hang around a shop back in the 80s.the tech would feel out customers.how much they could pay.if they had 100 dollars,the set was fixed.if they didnt,it became,"it cant be fixed".then he would hit them up for 25.00 check out charge.they usually told him to keep the set.10 minutes later,the set was repaired and put on the shelf for sale."it cant be fixed" is a term for,"you dont have enough money for repair"

Most things can be fixed BUT if I still had a shop I
would NOT fix a CRT TV unless they understood there
is NO guarantee beyond the front door. Its age
& finding parts not that its a CRT set.

The fact its intermittent may point to an easy fix but
they probably need a hobbyist. What are you doing tonite ??

Drop us the make, exact symptom, model # & or chassis #
and date, maybe its a common easy fix.

Not very classy way to do things. I never told anyone a set couldnt
be fixed or was NWR then sold the set. At best the chassis was
saved. We also used flat rate labor. Only time we strayed from that
was if we knew someone was down & out or the set was an
old POS.

That guy should have chosen banking as a career.

he became a flea market entrepreneur.selling mary kay and weed wackers while cross dressing.i guess electronic repair got to him.also,he had lost most of his customer base because of these shady tactics.saw this same thing in a few more columbus repair places

If it is a NAP Philco from the eighties, they were known for bad solder joints that would knock them out of whack. Easy fix too.

I believe their daughter told me that they may have bought it in 1986 or around that time. The same year as my RCA Console. I told their daughter to take it to the place that I have had mine at. This gentleman that works on mine has alot of parts around. Also, has repaired televisions for years and worked on about all brands I believe. I know he mentioned Philcos for sure. He is one that will not give up until he has it fixed or comes to the situtation where it is just impossible to make it go again.

I sure hope they give him a try as her folks really don't what to have to buy a Flat Screen.

Knew a lady like that,Mrs Gold,she would use a hidden variac to drop the line down to 200 volts,tell customers CRT was shot,sell them a new set,her daughters name,Moore Gold,of course.
