Rather unusual little set
 

Got this little gem at my shop for 3 bucks. I have never seen another one with knob-controlled electronic tuning. It was manufactured September 1991.

Pretty cool.

Do you think it may have been made for a commercial application? Hospital or something like that?

This little 5" jobbie has continuous (varactor) tuning with the knob on the side..

bare bones minimum,to say the least.i ll bet it has a really good picture

The CRT was bright, grayscale looked good and the OSD worked fine. I brought it home yesterday in the snow, so I want to wait another day to start it again. I'll post another pic once I try it with a signal. Come to think of it, I could have easily gotten a large bag to cover it. Oh well.

GE had a set, that had a tuner similar to that. It had a fine click tuner, that tuned all 83 channels. The later model also tuned some cable channels.
The tuning system was rather trouble-prone. :sigh:

To say the least. Used the EC chassis IIRC. Put many steaks
on the table.
Never seen this one but it has an RCA look to it. Cant remember any
others that clicked.

Is this a 12" B&W set? If so, it's rare to see this type of tuner on sets bigger than 5". Zenith made one 13" color TV in the mid '80's that used a similar tuner.

It's a 12" color set.

It has an excellent picture, but I can't get a good screenshot of the thing. Also, it doesn't pull in all the channels my Trinitron does, strange. The tuner goes up to 69.

Only goes to 69 cause it was made after cell phones took 70-83
part of the band.

Take a picture of the back. many times it's easier to tell who built it.
Toward of the end of the sets labeled "Sears" or "LXI", Sears had several firms making their sets, including RCA and GE.

I want to see the insides. :P

For now, a photo of the entire back, and a close-up of the labeling. It needs a good cleaning for sure.

By the way, I guess I didn't word the tuner range comment very well. Certain channels received by my Trinitron cannot be tuned in on this set even though the tuner covers those channels. Same with the 1986 Sears I just got.

Edit: I just watched a couple of shows on the latter with my Philips Colour Voice 2301 CATV converter hooked up. With that it pulls in the extra channels just fine. No idea why knob tuners won't do it. The converter requires the TV to be set on channel 2, and my 1991 Sears of course uses standby power and defaults to channel 3, so using the box on that would be a bit of extra work. I think my Jerrold StarCom III uses channel 3 though.
