hey all, I found this yesterday and i can find very few pics or info about it, It is a GE musaphonic radio 14 transistors just AM/FM with a big speaker in the cabinet. It is a model p1920a. the FM works fine AM is weak and the frequencies are not where they should be. maybe one day i can find a service manual for it. Anyone else have one of these? The audio sounds real nice.

Looks to be a pretty "Primo" set from the early Soiled State years..

Wiscojim Thank You! Thank You! Thank You! Wow that was quick! Do you specialize in collecting GE radios? I've never even seen a Official GE service book before.

WISCOJIM 04-01-2014 10:23 AM

You're welcome.

No, I don't actually specialize in anything, except maybe that I really enjoy early B&W TVs and the early color TVs with the round picture tubes.

I have a huge library of radio/TV books and service literature that I've accumulated over the years by partially buying out radio collector estates and defunct radio/TV service shop inventories.

I also often see GE Radio Service Guides at radio swap meets and estate sales, among other places. Ebay too, but they are often priced very high there.

thank you again, jim it was a bad solder joint and a little realignment. It now works great!

Dude! 14 transistor TRF. That's a fucking great radio from when they made 'em here! That thing will suck up AM like it hasn't eaten for years. Put a long wire on it!

mr_fixer 07-03-2014 11:03 PM

yup it is pretty sensitive on am now

after i found the poor solder joint in the rf osc it works really well, any given night i can pick up WLS,WBBM and WCBS and WLW just by using the loop antenna. I live about 40 miles west of Nashville TN. I'm wondering if this radio might be a stepping stone in the history of the GE superadio series, it has the musaphonic and long range badge on it.

GE has built some really great solid portables, I'm guessing that this is indeed a stepping stone to the SR series. Some consider the AM only P-780 to be the first really great GE portable radio... I have one and refer to it as my SR-0. :) Here is an article by Jay Allen on the P-780: http://radiojayallen.com/ge-p780/

I just saw one of those on craigslist today! it has the wrong knobs and he wants $27 for it. I wonder how hard it would be to get correct knobs for it?
