1983 RCA XL 100 Console TV
 

I just acquited this particular set. Haven't really checked it out too much yet. I have turned it on/off several times and notice maybe a little green tinit to the white in the snow. Could this be the green hue in the back of the set needing to be cut back a little?? Also, hooked up a converter box to the set without an antenna to see the screen. It looks pretty bright. Also, the screen seems a little green but turn off the AFT and that goes away. It needs to be cleaned up as it has alot of dust in the controls and etc. I did hookup a VCR and had sound but no picture. It seems to not want to do anything on Ch.3 but rather use Ch.4. I am going to bring it in today and see what happens.

The seller sent me photos of the set before I bought it and the picture(s) of the TV looked very good on a broadcast.

I say hook it up and give it a try. Let's see what happens.

Not too bad of a picture for being in storage for so long. The white seems real bright too bright for me in the picture. Also, white lettering is a little fuzzy. When I turn the AFT switch off it makes the set buzz. I can't post pictures to this site, but if someone wants to private message me I sent photos with my cell phone.

Defintely have issues here with this particular set and episode of "Rebel" in Black and White has a very pronounced green tint to it. Must be the picture tube of the Green Hue needs adjustment??

The picture seems to be getting better and better the longer the set is on. It seems to me the picture tube is a little slow at warming up. They hadn't used this set for years and years. Therefore, it set idle for a long time.
I would think a trip to my repairman would be the answer??
Also, a switch in converter boxes makes a difference to.

Could be the caps re-forming after all this time, although plugging in directly would give them more of a jolt than is recommended. Their values could be all over the place now, who knows. The set isn't really old enough for damage to be done if it is powered up directly. If something in B&W shows color it could need a grayscale adjustment.

Thanks for the heads up. I was just thinking about that myself. I adjusted the Green Drive in the back and BINGO no more green tint in and episode of Rin Tin Tin.

These were really well made sets in their days.

How can I get a white background to not be so bright? When it comes to a pure white background it seems a little overdone to my eyes. :scratch2:

I adjusted both the Bright & Contrast and that helped some. Had to turn to much as I am afraid of loosing my good picture.

Why can't I get any of the Converter Boxes to work with TV on Ch.3. All, I get is some sound and black and white snow on Ch.3. Is this an idication of a problem in the turner or not?:scratch2:

Sounds like the CRT is just a little weak. Run with brite & contrast down
in subdued light. Even when new it wont have the snap of a newer set
but can deliver almost as good a pix if running properly. Keep on using it
& the CRT will improve to a point & always do your adjusting after a good warm up.

As far as your cable boxes go try the cable-normal switch. On an RCA
usually on the antenna terminal board or behind the control door.
On portables sometimes along the top rear of cabinet. Its there somewheres !

There are also very common & easy to fix tuner problems with RCA's
but cross that bridge if the time comes. For now best to get things
going with a VCR & tape, something the set "likes" & was designed
to use........

I am getting a real bad buzzing noise in bright white background commercials and maybe a little odd picture when this happens. I have the rotary dial to set your channel number. Can I correct this problem by adjusting the channel number setting with a screwdriver in the control panel under the rotary dial??:scratch2:

You mean there's a fine-tuning control for each VHF station? I saw that on a RCA portable before. If so, couldn't hurt to give it a twist.

Yes, there's a fine tuning for each VHF channel on the dial. I might try to tweak it a little today & see if it helps or not? I have noticed that I have to have AFT switch On. If I turn it off the TV isn't as clear & also makes a static noise similar to what we use to get on an analog station when it was fading in and out.

Went and adjusted the VHF for Ch.3 it is now possible to run the box on Ch.3 now. I am blooming a little red on the outlines of certain pictures. Would it help to go in and turn down the red drive on the back of the set?? :scratch2:

That's known as color bleeding. The CRT has seen better days. :thumbsdn:
