No substitute for 7EP4. Anyone have a spare for restoring a Transvision?

7JP4 will work if you can talk yourself into swapping the socket. It is a full inch shorter neck, on average. Being a "Kit" TV of the era, I think a changed socket would be more acceptable than a non-kit set. It is also entirely possible that you could make a socket adapter that would fit inside the 1" saved with a 7JP4. (Getting this down to the 1" zone is possible if you pot the final assembly, because the pins will be "meshed.")


Just some food for thought. Where are you located? If you can't make it to Kutztown in two weeks I could attempt to locate one for you when I'm there.

7EP4's are out there but they're not common. I looked a couple of years before I found one. You can always sub a 5BP4 during restoration as it won't require any modifications to the chassis and use a smaller CRT until a 7E comes along. Maybe you could make a temporary mask in such a way that wouldn't modify the cabinet (or front board if it's sans cabinet) and enjoy it for the long haul.
Do you have any photographs of your set? Always cool to see a Transvision kit! I've been searching for an original copy of the build manual to display with my set.

You can't really use a 7JP4 to sub for a 7EP4. The 7EP4 was designed to operate with 2,000V on the second anode while the 7JP4 was 6,000V.

As John said the 5BP4 would be a better choice until you can find 7EP4.
