Sony KP-48S35 projection set October 1997

Got this in the other day and is cosmetically perfect. Turn it on and the led blinks several times for a few seconds and finally comes on. Sound is good and stays on. Pucture is good but blinks on and off continuously. There's another number near the chassis but not sure it it will help. SC-K90B-A.

I dont remember projos but on a direct view the
CRT being weak causes that. They built it to kill the video
if the CRT is weak. I asked Sony why they did it & they
told me they didnt want sets with bad pictures !
So odds are one or more CRT is weak. Turning up the
G-2 a little on the offending tube (s) sometimes stops it
for a time.

I checked it again last night and i thought it would never come on. sound alwas comes on right away but after what seemed like 50 blinks of the red led, the screen finally came up but would still flash on and off. I had the front off this time and when i turned it on, i could hear squealing and hissing ss if something was leaking. At the same time, there was a smell like ionized air. Reminded me of walking into a room that has an ionizer being used.. After several minutes, the hissing snd smell went sway and right after that, the screen stayed on as if everything was normal. trying to pull up the menu seemed to affect it as if it was putting a load on it snd it would start flashing on and off again for a bit. After running, i powered up a couple times and the red led blinks 12 times. not sure about cold startup. Would this be leaky caps?

Sounds like HV leaking. As said look at it in a dark room.
They can leak at HV transformer, HV divider, anode connections,
& the focus pins & pots. Dont think its a yoke, that would
really mess up the pix.
Find that before worrying about the flashing. May be whats causing it.

That's what i was thinking. seems like a voltage leak. Was running ing the dark the other night and didn't notice anything but i'll look again. All three lenses light up bright as hell. There is a slight green hase though even on a black screen. . Static screen with nothing connected is very clear and bright.

If you dont see the arcing you can use an insulated tube like
a paper towel tube to track the noise down. Works great
for me as I cant hear the hoz freq. Can find screeching parts
that way even if half deef..............

Your green is prob 1 of 3 things.
1) the green is the best tube.
2) the green is the worst tube & is bleeding.
3) G-2 too high on green.

Things can also need cleaning & the coolant is a common problem.

May try to get some pics up. May end up using this set for parts if they'll interchange to my sony 53. They look identical except for the size.

Decided on scrapping this one. Tried turning it on last night and symptoms worse.
