Panel vans always go for big money, selling your whole collection wouldn't be enough....

a 55 barndoor vw is a rare animal. IIRC it refers to the engine cover in the back, which they changed after a year or two. (I was very into vws a few years back and did a ground up rebuild of a '68 beetle)

Nice bus. I have a 61 VW camper, a 66 VW Fastback and a 71 VW Bus. Busses that are logo'd like that can bring big bucks, especially for a barndoor.

Always thought I wanted one w/the 21 windows, until I started pricing them out.... But WHEN was the last time you saw an air-cooled VW of ANY description on the loose in everyday traffic ? Yeah, I thought so....

I have to disagree with never or even hardly ever seeing air cooled VWs on the road. Now YES "punch bug" playing days for kids are long gone. I wouldn't be much fun. But I have a nice 1969 Beetle and I still see quite a few on the road. I wouldn't say necessarily every day, but they are regularly seen. I wish I had kept a camper "micro bus" version that I had in the 1990s when you could still pick up nice ones for a song.

As an owner I'm glad that prices aren't getting any cheaper for just a plain old Bug in decent shape. For about $13K you can get new ones brought in from Mexico where they still made them until relatively recently. Really they are almost new as they are illegal in the U.S., so companies take good old chassis (pans) down below the border and retrofit all new parts on the pan and then mount the beautiful NEW body, motor, trans, etc. So you have an almost new car with a few modern amenities that VW has added through the years.

I have often thought that if I were to get a new car that a new/old Bug would be really cool and easy to maintain, but that price is a bit high I think. I'm sure that they are luring the elite who can play with that kind of money.

Mine is having engine work done, but I used to daily it to work back when I lived in Chicago. Getting a bigger turbo and intercooler installed... I also have a Corvair being restored, more air cooled love:

Actually there are quite a few in Arizona, and many are daily drivers. No rust in the desert. There are a number of guys here in Tucson (the Bus Mob) and in Phoenix (Arizona Bus Club). The Arizona Bus Club has a major camp out once a year in Jerome, Arizona where we raffle off a restored Bus once a year. We're having our 25th Jamboree this September. Check it out.

A turbo and intercooler on an air cooled VW?!?!? Interesting for sure. I have never seen that kind of setup, but I haven't paid attention to the magazines and latest trends. I like mine stock with only small custom items like Empi wheels and a chrome air filter. That's about it for mine. Love the little thing if I can just keep this crazy ethanol gasoline from rotting my fuel system. Just need to drive it more and keep it circulating....:D
