Spectacular Zenith Console

Someone sent me these pictures of an early 50's Zenith 21? inch combo, the guts look like standard Zenith but the cabinet is spectacular, and one I've never seen before, possibly a custom job? I'm guessing 1952-53 on the year, I base this on the controls which look similar to those years but with the chassis turned on it's side.

Anyone have any information on this model? Sender didn't have a model number but I told them where they might look to find it.

Looks like something you'd see at the Museum of Modern Art in NYC. At least to my untrained eye. :D

Wonder if it credits some big name artist?

I have a 21" table set (with stand) that uses that chassis, and based on the knob spacing relative to the screen I'd say yours is a 23"-27" screen set....Quite the rarity! I'd grab it if local and priced sanely.
Here is a picture of mine for comparison: http://i1095.photobucket.com/albums/...h_DSCN0541.jpg

I believe that radio is 11" wide, if that helps you scale it.

The detail on the lower left looks almost geographic, perhaps made for an ambassador or foreign leader? Then again, it could be abstract...

I see a nautical theme in the woodwork. The nautical rose on the right, and the sails on the left, and a long waving banner at the top center. The thing in the lower left could be a wave.

I just noticed that too - the pennant, three? sails, and maybe the bow/prow of a ship?

I'm guessing 1953 27" similar to this built into a very fancy custom combo.

The sender said it as a gift from his Grandfather, I don't know if he meant his GF recently gave it to him or if he gave it to his parents back when, guess I can ask if he (or she?) writes back.

I also don't know if it's for sale or where it's located, I would love to have it but can't even think about it due to space issues.

I urged him to keep it away from the Repurposers but if it was his grandpas they may not want to part with it.

It's a great example of "mid-century" design. It would've been very chic back in the day. In the wrong hands that will quickly become a liquor cabinet. Definately an abstract sail-boat theme. I can picture one of those wild '50's lamps on top!
