My "new" Zenith Porthole set 28T961E

Found this 10" Zenith Porthole on Craigslist a week or more ago, I resisted the urge to get it due to lack of space but I finally gave in and contacted the seller and made arraignments to see it, and test the CRT.

Well the CRT tested very good so the deal was done.

It's all there, except it's missing all the chassis bolts, I took it apart to haul it home so the chassis wouldn't be flopping about.

Anyway, cabinet is solid, no rot, not falling apart, dry California weather has been kind to it. The years have been a little less kind as the Veneer is all chipped to bits around the top and sides, it'll need completely redone, it shouldn't be too hard since it's basically a square box, hopefully the African Afara tree isn't extinct or something.

Chassis is filthy, the rubber around the CRT has melted to goo, California smog and heat was too much for it I guess. Set probably hasn't felt the tickle of Electricity since Uncle Milty was on the air!

The woven Plastic? grille looks very good, glad of that because it would be impossible to replace.

Hard to pass up on a porthole isn't it? I think the woven grill on that model is a cool look! Nice find!!

Great save. Glad you got it. I got the 12'' blonde version, good player.

ANOTHER one for the Porthole Club ! To me, they're almost as "Majickal" as a Roundie... Just SOMETHING about a Porthole...

My sentiments too.
Porthole TVs are a lot of eye candy.
Very unusual and stylish.

I attempted to bring this set up on the Variac, it has a shorted cap, it's drawing about 1 amp at 70 volts and the main filter on the power supply chassis gets really warm.

The recapped chassis from my 16" draws a little less than 1 amp when it's working at 115v.

Nice find. I believe that's from Zenith first line of production TV's in '48. A classic set. Good luck with it!
