1960's Panasonic RE-7371

I got this cute little radio from an estate sale the other day for $10. It cleaned up very nice, GOJO Creme made the veneer shine. It sounds fabulous on both bands, but when I click it off, it blasts sound back at me for about two seconds, then fades away. Sometimes it changes stations during the fade. I'm scared if it continues, it could hurt the speaker. It can be heard on the other side of the house.

That may be normal for that set. The main lytics clearly hold enough charge to run it for 2 secs. The drift is logical...As the voltage to the oscillator drops it's frequency changes and the radio frequency that it hetrodynes down into the IF chain changes. The blasting may or may not be normal it would depend on the output circuit, and its biasing system...

May be noisy on/off sw.
Put a toggle switch in its place & see if it helps.
Sams does not cover this so if its something in the
amp all you can do is test everything & hope. I do
not believe its normal, a slow clean fade would be.

At Sony we had something called "crystaline growth".
On the ship the salt air would react with anything with contacts.
Switches, pots, etc. Big problem with Jap stuff in the early
days. A plastic bag & silica gel all but ended it.
