50's Philips I rescued today
4 Attachment(s)
This was the last tube radio left on the basement of a retired radio and TV repairman. His son sold it to me. It is really beat up, I know, but I know just the person who I believe can bring it back to it's former glory - even though it won't be cheap. This little guy is a Philips model "BR 305 U" , I think the "BR" means it was made in Brazil. I believe that it might have been manufactured sometime around 1950. If that was the case this radio might have been used to listen to the "Maracanazzo" , the defeat of the Brazilian soccer team in the final match against Uruguay in the Maracană stadium in Rio de Janeiro on the World Cup of 1950.

Here's a brother of my radio, model "BR 306 U" , practically the same radio:

Well, she's pretty rough, but if THAT stopped guys like US, there'd be a lot less of these bad boys to enjoy ! And if it was EASY, any Jakeleg could do it...Keep us updated on yr progress...

I will report the progress I hope to have with it... but it will take time. It will not go on restore this year, most likely only on the second half of 2017.
But I made a little discovery today: the year it was manufactured. My 1950 guess was pretty close. It was made in 1951. I found on a collector web site a list of all the radios made by Philips of Brazil between 1949 and 1957: http://www.qsl.net/py3cnq/philibra.htm |
I love to find radios in this shape or worse. My thinking is fixing worse and worse radios makes our skills better. It will be a nice radio when finished.
