1941 Dewald "Jewel" barn sale find
1 Attachment(s)
This is a 1941 Dewald model 561 "Jewel" that I scored at a local barn sale. I had already checked the items out and was leaving, but decided to take my time going out. I suddenly saw the radio, but had a feeling the seller would hit me with something like $500 or $1,000 adding "these go for more than that on the Net", but was pleasantly surprised when he said "$50". One of the few good deals I ever got in this hobby!
The set was totally "as-found" when I got it and a few hours of detailing with Novus products made it glow once again. It has a couple of very minor flaws and the knobs are not original, but it's beautiful. It has a warm red-orange-yellow swirled (originally all golden yellow) glow with rich burgundy trim. I love the cool glassy feel of these hefty little sets! |
When you decide that you ever want to sell it. I'll give you the $50 you paid for it, plus another $50. That way it's a win win for everyone :)

Thanks guys. I have VERY few "lucky-find" stories, but this was such a surprise. I love the warm pumpkin color with the "raspberry" trim. It's like candy. I've since purchased correct style repro knobs, but had to settle for yellow. Good enough for now.
PS - Funny Tony, but, seriously, not being a catalin collector, I'm open to use this set for a trade deal for an interesting '30's wood radio or one of the lesser-seen late '40's 7" TV's. It would best be local pick-up though. |
Holy cow, it looks shinny, but that's about all I can tell in that lighting. You must occasionally have sunlight in Long Island? ;)

Awesome find. Those "I can't believe I found one cheap" finds are some of the best moments of the hobby.
With how nice it is I wonder if it was kept in the house....Most barn sets out here are VERY shabby. |

Kevin - excuse the photo. Without the flash and it came out pretty dark. The flash on my old camera is sometimes a bit too much. Yeah, we actually get a lot of sunny days here actually on the Island, but a fair share of gloomy days and blustery winds too. Not near as bad here as new England. |
