Okay, so I fired up Laura and noticed that while the sound came on normally, it was taking a long time for the picture to show up.
Dang it, this is what I got.
Is this another capacitor that has to be replaced? Please, couldn't it be a tube this time? I'm good at those! :D
Funny thing is, she worked just fine last week. I haven't been watching much TV lately, so she only gets turned on once a week or so.
Any thoughts to help a poor fool like me?

Looks like the pincusion circuit isn't working right. That's ususally the circuits electrically near that small transformer with three bobbins fed by the horizonral and vertical deflection circuits. Maybe a trimpot went open?

I once had a dream of a colour TV with concave sides like the picture on your telly. Anyways hope you get the problem fixed, nice looking set.

It looks like a cap to me. Also, IIRC a round screen set has no pincushion transformer or correction. That wasn't needed until rectangular screens came out. For RCA the CTC17 chassis was the first to use that.

Looks like a main power supply problem to me...looks like a case of low B+ voltage. May be leaky or open caps.

looks like the 160@250vdc filter cap is bad they didnt use pin cushion correction on the roundies, didnt need it

Yes, that is definately a power supply cap and you can easily isolate which one it is simply by putting a good one across the old one.

Which I tried just the other night, to no avail. Figures.
But here's a question: what are the chances that a new cap will go bad within a few months? Pretty slim, I would suppose.
I ask because oldtvman suggested it might be the 160@250 cap, which is one I replaced several months ago. It's also one I didn't bother checking the other night. Guess it wouldn't hurt to give it a try. If one of the solder joints went bad on this cap (I've moved it around a little to get to other things under there), would that cause the short-wavy-picture problem? I'm a little irritated with this because it's one of those cases where "it worked just fine yesterday." :smoke:

I like your zenith. good looking set. Check the caps you put in . I have had new caps go bad before. Any time I put in new caps I will check to see if they get warm.
If they do I will replace it with a higher voltage cap. When you use a roundie as an every day runner they will give you trouble. Some times it has taken me 6 months to get all the bugs out. But when you do, The set will run trouble free for years.

one of the rectifiers cound have gone open.
seen it in a 16 a while back.

Look for an experienced TV repair man in your area if problem persists. I kwow this isn't recommneded route, but may have advanced problem that's hard to find. Think about that option, I don't know what you have for repair equipment, sometimes you look back and wish had someone just fix it. Good luck, again NICE SET.

with the darker shade of image in the center, it looks like low B+ to me, and could be caused by a bad cap or near open resistor. test all the parts in the power supply circuitry.

Heck, ive seen alot of new caps go bad, especially the case with nichicon caps. They suck. :thumbsdn:
