This is like the 4th time I think I've seen it listed. I have been tempted to e-mail and say GET A CLUE!!! It is from this recently ended auction I think is why they feel their set is worth so much. I was surprised this one went for so much..... http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...MEWA%3AIT&rd=1

I had an orange Quasar with a bad picture tube. It met its end a few months back. WHAT was I thinking!!! ;)
|
I was noticing in the older auction... the Motorola... it had the newer click style UHF tuner. When did everyone start using those? Like 73 or 74?
Also, when did Motorola stop using their name on sets and start using Quasar? |
According to an RCA brochure "Everything you should know about solid state color TV": On July 1, 1975 the FCC mandated that all televisions made in USA feature UHF tuners as easy to tune as VHF. This was the beginning of the detented UHF tuner.

This set was not made by Motorola. Motorola sold their home electronics business to the Japanese(I forget to which company) in 1974. The Quasar name went with it. I do not know how long the Japanese company used the Quasar logo.

The set that justout66 mentions is a Motorola set. It is similar in styling to two late 1960s tube type Motorola sets that I have. This must have been one of the last ones that Motorola made before selling the business.
My sets are nearly as colorful though, white and white with grey around the CRT. |
Wow - I had no idea a green television could bring so much money. Gee, maybe I should try to sell my "Color-converted" Zenith...

RetroHacker,
A green picture tube in that green TV, that would be pretty damn cool, and also be the perfect TV for the guy who bought the lime-green hatchback. :) Jonathan |
