Murray's CT-100 update
 

I've decided to start a new thread on the restoration of forum member Murray's CT-100. I finished recapping most of the set and replaced several resistors, tubes, peaking coils, and the hue control that I mentioned in a previous post. I'm including some pictures that I took this afternoon. It actually looks better in person than it does in my poor photography. The interference on the left side of the screen in the shot of the color bars was due to the high voltage cage having been removed.

Kudo's to Kissinger on the CT-100 restoration!
 

For those of you lucky enough to ever come across an RCA CT-100 as I did recently on Ebay (previously owned by Craig Highberger, OH), I have attached conclusive evidence of why you should not have it shipped to yourself, but to Steve Kissinger, [email protected] , in Thousand Oaks, CA.

Steve restored my CT-100, and, as you can see from the attached, and the convergence color decoder circuits never looked better.

BTW, the funny looking guy next to the CT-100 is me.

Steve and I were joined by the estimable Ed Reitan and the well known CT-100 devotee Steve Dichter on the delivery day, whcih made it all the sweeter.

Ed said he had never seen a CT-100 with better convergence.

How much does a restoration like that set a person back?

The cost would vary greatly by how many of the legions of CT-100 parts (caps, resistors, coils, variable pots, tubes, etc.) needed to be replaced, as well as how much alignment time might be necessary based on the condition of the vital and secondary components, many of which either cannot be replaced or must be rebuilt or salvaged if possible from other lesser sets (if you can find one).

If you were to pay $3-5,000 for a good CT-100, another 10-20% for electronic (not the cabinet) restoration would be a rough estimate.

However, if you do not have a strong 15GP22 CRT to start with, then do not expect restoration/alignment to deliver a great picture.

I remember I wanted a CT-100 so bad that I had a dream about it. In the dream I was in the car talking on the phone with someone who wants to sell me a CT-100 for $1000, but the condition of the set wasn't discussed. The seller was the person selling a CT-100 on ETF a while ago. I was driving on the street where the house of a girl I have a strong crush on was located. Her and her sister were standing on their front porch.

It was some dream, and that girl is in college now pretty far away. I had a perfect oppertunity to ask her out, but every time I attemped to do it, I chickened out...

Something tells me I really missed out, because she is amazing. Having a CT-100, and her, will make my life complete. But hey, maybe in the future I'll come across both her and the CT-100 again...

Yup, I've often imagined myself stumbling upon one in a junk store on one of my hunts... dropping to my knees with a tear running down my cheek. Actually I'd probably chain myself to it so nobody could snag it before I paid the guy!

I would only have that reaction if lifting the lid of TRK-12 cabinet revealed a dry sink.

Hmmmphf !! Youse guys are NUTZ !! Why in their right mind would ANYONE want an old television w/questionable reliability, smallish picture, & it ain't even HD ?!? Granted, it DOES have a decent picture, & a pretty cabinet, but really...Y'all need to hie yrselves over the nearest Circus Shitty, & git yerselves a real TV- a nice plasma or LCD one. I bet that old thaing don't even get UHF...<grin>-Sandy G.

Here are some of the parts Steve Kissinger had to replace in my CT-100 during the restoration process.

Interestingly, the set had supposedly been restored in 1993.
