RCA 9-PC-41 Projection set on eBay...
 

It just gets to me when somebody.... And all too often... makes a statement like this guy did. "ONLY 12 MADE". :smoke: I guess he meant "only 12 made the same morning as that one" . I've had several 9-PC-41s, and a dozen more with the earlier cabinets. At least he didn't say it was an 1864 model and that it belonged to Lincoln :D

I emailed the seller and explained that this model (and the previous) were the most common projection sets found and probably a couple thousand were manufactured. I expected a curt reply or to be ignored completely, I was surprised that I got an answer that was courteous and even asked some additional questions. They were given that information from someone and took it as gospel.

Sometimes sellers aren't stretching the truth in their descriptions for sales impact, they just don't know.

It's true that many of these people just don't know, but I sell lots of things on eBay that I don't know anything about. I just add words & phrases such as "Appears to be", "Seems", "I was told by...", or "I believe this is...". So this avoids annoying those viewers who DO know what it is, while allowing suggestion as to what the facts may be.

Matter of fact, sometimes I've had better luck selling eBay items when I play TOTALLY dumb in my descriptions :headscrat .

I'm batting about .500 with reactions to polite suggestions. I'm hardly the world's leading authority on anything, but sometimes it seems appropriate to reach out to people when it seems they're just guessing wildly. Sometimes I've been heartily thanked, and sometimes I've been ignored, but fortunately never savaged. Still, lately I figure why bother? I mean, who would buy a "rare set, only 12 made" on the word of an unknown eBay seller? And anyone interested in such a set would likely know that the guy is either ignorant or full of it.

My best story to date in "reaching out" was a guy selling a camcorder that accidentally took a bath in a lake. I wouldn't have minded buying it from him, it was listed dirt cheap, but I told him he might want to try rinsing it with distilled water, dry it carefully for a l-o-n-g time and then try it again. He ended the auction and a week later was really happy to let me know that it was working again! People are always real surprised when that works!!!

A guy I know was selling decals for early Magnavox horns; he was advertising them as window decals for a showroom. I kindly sent him an email explaining just what he had & that he would do well to list them correctly. For some reason he didn't believe me & sold a whole pile of them for next to nothing.

I don't live too far from owner, and asked if they would consider trade. They sent me a curt reply on no interest, they only want to get as much as they can for the set. I guess that ends it.....
