207 Converter - "Pee-Wee"

An accessory that was available in some areas was the VHF (Very High Frequency) Converter in the Pee-Wee case, Model 207. By the late thirties, many cites had switched their police radio communications to higher frequencies, especially the radio transmitters installed in police cars. This little converter allowed the user to hear both sides of the police call, (if you had a separate radio for receiving the Police Station transmitter.)

To hear both sides of a conversation, they could have added a second front end converter tube that would tune in the second frequency the other side of the conversation was transmitterd on, and then feed it to the first IF transformer along with the other converter tube. There would be two tuning dials, one per converter tube. Wonder if anyone made radios like this. Of course you'd get heterodynes if both tuners were set within 10KHz of each other, but people would be told to avoid doing that. ANd setting the two dials apart the set's IF frequency would also be a problem. Presumidly few police or fire depts had their frequencies allocated 455KHz apart. Or use another IF frequency like 10.7 or 8.4MHz (used in older FM sets)

I actually visited that place in Virginia City about 8 years ago. Pretty cool town, lots of interesting historical sites, tours and events and the radio museum was my favorite. They have camel races there in the tourist season. about an hour south of Reno Nevada. Home of the famous Comstock Lode silver mine, that the Union used to finance the Civil War.
