Italian Philips TV back from the Hell!!

I would like to share with you some photos of my new toy, a 1955 Philips 17" B&W TV. It arrived just a month ago, the express courier managed to smash the CRT (an MW43-64 70° deflection angle), the back cover and to make a rectangular hole on the top of the cabinet :tears: . Anyway I had a very strong spare CRT, I cleaned the chassis with lighter fuel, I recapped the whole TV and I was rewarded with a very good working "toy" . Just yesterday I found an UHF converter in my spare caddy and hooked it up...needless to say I got a very good picture. I must say I was worried about the alignment would go nuts with the converter addition, but so far so good :D ....

I have only to discover why the vert sync is a little unstable on the first 10-15 minutes of operation and where the EHT sometimes discharges with a quite loud bang and I could declair it done

One word- WOW !! I see shipping people are just as "careful" w/stuff over there as they are here.... One thing you said DID kinda scare me- PUH-LEEZE be extra, extra careful when using something flammable like lighter fluid to clean with. One teeny, tiny spark-and-Well, I don't wanna even think about it...The TV is GORGEOUS...Did you get the Hole in the cabinet squared away, too ?

I am currently in a "fight" with the express courier to have a bit of justice for the damage I have had and they seems willingly to pay me.. wish me luck!!

I always used lighter fluid without any issues, a dear friend of mine uses it to clean vintage guitars (yes, those american ones...). Of course you must not smoke when you are doing this kind of cleaning, be sure that the EHT is discharged BEFORE cleaning ;) and use common sense!!

The cabinet is currently in the hands of a friend expert in this kind of restorations, but he says that the damage is expecially nasty because of the construction... He was even thinking about making a new one for me :nono: well... I hope in the best

I have forgot to mention in my first post that I had to hand-rewind the power autotransformer, not too bad of a job...

BTW Sandy G I like very much your avatar!! My friend has a Citroen DS that looks very very cool... Maybe I change my avatar with this car!

Very nice! This same model was manufactured by Philips here in Brazil too. I have a magazine from March of 1955 which has an ad for that set.

This model was very popular here in Italy in the '50 but mine is the first I've ever seen, mine is also strange, this model usually was fitted with a metal cone CRT, or at least a friend of mine told me this, I have an MW 43-64 all glass and it seems to work flawlessy.

I found the fault in the vert section, it was a 2M2 resistor feeding the sync separator plate (an ECL80) that drifted to over 6M, now when you change channel, it sync instantly and mantain it as long as you play the set :banana: . Also the EHT seems to be OK and it doesn't discharge anymore. I have to wait the cabinet from my friend whom is repairing the rectangular hole and I can put it in regular use (2-3 hours a day... I know I shouldn't use it so much, but I couldn't resist :D )
