I have one just about lkie it . (a slightly different cabinet.)

And it is a ctc-16, with a hybrid stereo. (tube tuner and preamp, germanium amp.)1965, I think.

And I paid WAY less than $100 for mine!!

Worst cataract I've seen, but NICE set! The cataract could keep the bids on this one reasonable if it scares off some bidders :thmbsp:

Very nice!

Andy has a nice version of that set but with the CTC-15 from '64. Cabinet may not be as perfect but it looks really neat with what I think was called an Italian cabinet design. I say that because I saw Andy's cabinet in a B/W newspaper ad from late '63 inwhich it was called Italian by the dealer.
I would get Andy's set if it were closer.
I guess a lot of us have that dilema!

Bobby, the RUle With Roundies is they are ALWAYS on the other side of the state/country/galaxy/universe from where you are...The more desirable the roundie in question is, the farther away from you it will always be...

Could that CRT be busted? That looks more like air inrush than cataracts.

I don't think so... It looks nice in the middle, and that's where an inrush would have made it cleared. So I think it's just an awful cataract. So awful, that I bet the glass will come off easy because there probably isn't much adhesion anymore :)

LOL.. looks like a giant "eye"
why did they always use crappy ceramic phono cartriges in these big consoles??

Sandy G 07-25-2006 01:19 PM

Chirpy chirpy CHEAP CHEAP !!

Chad Hauris 07-25-2006 08:27 PM

It is not too difficult to retrofit with a magnetic cartridge such as a Pickering NP/AC and an LKG phono preamp. I think this RCA has a 1/2 inch mount for a magnetic. We do this a lot with Wurlitzer jukeboxes which usually used ceramics and the sound quality is a lot better.
I don't know why a lot of these used ceramics though other than cost and that they offer a flip over needle for 78 RPM records. The ceramics seem to do quite well with 78's.
The higher priced consoles such as those using Garrard turntables often did use a magnetic.

Yes, I know. I'm seriously considering it! Thing is, I don't know what I'd do with it. I could keep it at my camp, but I really don't want to do that. I could possibly shuffle some of my sets around... perhaps take a couple here at my house and put them at camp... then I could put it in the living room here at home.

One of our early AK-er's had one of these in CA... I remember the photo from a few years back... and I always admired the front woodwork over the speakers. I never thought one would pop up near me... and looks like I was wrong! Hmmmm... what to do! Decisions decisions!

A B&W set also in TX

Off topic here but I didn't want to start another thread just for this.

If your going to Dallas you might as well pick this up too :D

It appears someone else has an interest in this beast... a bid has gone up. I had hoped this would happen... as I really don't have a place to put this thing right now. Hell, I have 3 entertainment centers already! Had I brought this set home, I'd be sleeping or eating dinner on top of it!

I was going to bid at the last minute if no one else did... just to make sure it got a home. Hopefully, the current bidder is an AK-er.

bkharris 08-03-2006 07:52 PM

I bought it...It will have a good home...Now to see about the cataract
