BOMBSHELL: Meissner prewar TV now on eBay
 

As I had mentioned subtly in a previous thread, here it is! This is Gary Miller's set, which he asked me to put up on eBay for him. It's listed with an $8000 reserve, which eBay rules prevent from being disclosed in the ad. He is hoping it will go beyond that, but he won't take less.

Nobody seems to know the history on it before Gary bought it in 1991 from Alan Kleiman in LA. It has had 1980s vintage work done (a few new caps), so it must have belonged to a collector or maybe a HAM radio guy, or somebody. Alan told me back than that he got it locally, but wouldn't say from whom. I bet it might have been Kent Warner's estate, or from a third party who got it from there...

One purpose of this posting is to ask that nobody bug Gary about selling it outside of eBay. That won't happen. There are several collectors who were aware that the set was to be sold within the past few months who did not act on it but were considering, so in fairness to all and to prevent favoritism, the eBay auction will go forth. Thank you for your understanding. Gary does welcome any serious would-be bidders to come see it.

It will be interesting to see where it goes, both monetarily and geographically.

I could pick it up,, course I'd be walking cause I'd have to sell my truck to help pay for it.
Actually the money from selling my truck wouldn't even pay for the knobs on a Pre-War :D

That set is now in the Early Television Foundation museum. I saw it there with a copy of the Ebay sale posted on the wall. I think there are only 3 or 4 with the cabinet known to the museum. Deals are out there to be made. You have to keep on trying and be lucky.

WHEN????????????? Is the eBay number known or still on the eBay closed auctions? I guess we all missed it. Tow other prewar sets have been bought for next-to-nothing; (nameless in LA)'s '39 DuMont 15" table model for a song, from the kids of the original owner. And (nameless in Omaha)'s RR-359 for $40. Where am I when those deals come up :sigh:

But I did buy a VERY CLEAN Toyota Camry on eBay for $61 a couple years ago due to a misspelling/mislisting.

Someone posted the Ebay link on AudioKarma the day after it closed. I contacted the winner, who by that time had figured out that is wasn't an oscilloscope (he collected them), and was able to buy it from him for the museum. Unfortunately, we paid quite a bit more than $5.

DID NOT SELL! Reserve was set by Gary at $8000.

The set is now fair game, although the high bidder has contacted me with interest and has been promised first chance within a reasonable time, and if he negotiates successfully with Gary. At this time, there are no plans to relist it on eBay... $80 in listing fees :(

I wish I had abit more cash I would like to have that set! Ebay is on a low and no one is buying the expensive stuff! I am amazed that the set went that low, I would really thought the set would have gone for $6,500-7,500! Charles I bet your glad you put a reserve on that!

Gary sure is!!!! (But since no sale, no commission for me :tears: )

It is a scam and do not go for it. I wonder if this is a Nigerian or Russian scam. It would be interesting to see where the money would go with buy it now. I would report the email to Ebay. The more we report the faster we can clean up this mess.

Oh come on, I knew it was a scam as soon as it showed up. Nobody with an IQ above room temperature could possibly fall for one of these if they read the whole thing--typos, clumsy syntax, "eBay warehouse" and especially the part about not contacting the seller directly.

And yes, despite almost believing that anybody stupid enough to fall for this deserves to, I reported it as phishing.
