1956 Sylvania Halolight
 

Hello! Just picked up a '56 halolight ("the Kelsey") Model 21C401M from an antique shop. Always wanted one in my living room for "atmosphere" not restoration. It looks pretty good, but I was seeking advice on how to clean the Mahogany cabinet and maybe clean the gold thread fabric and faux finish on the lower front. Just needs some spiffing up. Are there any safety concerns I should have if the screen ever got accidentally bumped or struck? (No kids in house) Please excuse my total ignorance here, but I enjoyed reading a thread about horror stories, only it put the spook in me. I read about....picture tube implosion...thousands of lbs of pressure...no safety glass pre-sixties, etc. Are there any dangers to having this 50's beaut just sitting there? Needless to say, the power cord is getting wrapped up snugly! Any suggestions greatly appreciated...thanks! Patty

Where are you located? There are a bunch of Tv nuts here that are able to restore the set to working condition. Shame to have it and it not work. It will add much more to your room. No real dangers with the picture tube. It would take a serious blow to pop the picture tube.

Sorry! I knew saying I would only display it would horrify some people. I don't know a soul in Massachusetts who restores old televisions. I would never junk it. If I ever changed my mind, I would find a collector first! I really want to save and preserve this set. It's missing a small vert. hold knob...maybe I can mold & cast it if I never find a replacement. I'm just a wimp about ever firing it up....part of me would LOVE to see the halolight buzz to life someday. It's my first old set....this is a new realm of collecting for me. I am kookoo for '50's design. I will be taking pics and scanning them soon, if I can figure out how to attach 'em here too. Old tv's are COOL!!

There are some audiokarma members in your area. Post a want ad and maybe somebody will offer to repair the set.
