porthole chassis removal question
 

I'm in the process of helping a friend fix up his porthole. It's a 1951 Model H2449E with a 24H20 chassis and a 16GP4.

Does the chassis and tube slide out together, or is the CRT mounted to the cabinet? The chassis needs some caps and TLC, and I've never pulled a porthole for repairs before.

I would greatly appreciate it if any porthole owners could chime in on this.

I've only worked on 12" portholes but those have the CRT mounted to the chassis. I think the 16" sets are the same. There should just be 4 chassis bolts to remove and it will slide out (after removing all of the knobs of course). There may also be a ground wire going from the chassis to a screw on the escutcheon that will also need to be disconnected. Also watch out for the picture switch in the front controls. I think the '51 sets have it attached to the chassis but I found out the hard way on my '50 porthole that it was attached to the escutcheon.

Does anyone know if that particular model is the picture switched attached to the escutcheon, and if so how difficult is it to disconnect the switch from the chassis?

I think you unscrew it from the escutcheon from the front of the TV, then feed it back through the hole... I don't think those unplug from the chassis.

The switch is mounted to the chassis. Just pull the knobs off, remove the 4 chassis bolts, unplug the power supply & ground lead, disconnect the 300 ohm.
The chassis & CRT will slide out together.
