I recall those things as a child. You are correct in assuming that it was about 1953. I believe they had a switch on them to turn that "halo" light off. You will understand why if you look at it for more than 20 minutes. It seems the light was brighter than the picture in most cases and caused some real headaches, literally, as well as some severe eye strain. That was the principle reason it died so quickly. Out side of that, it was a great set for blind people or folks with limited vision. Ya didn't have to bob your head like Stevie Wonder to find out where the sound was coming from.
