I have a Zenith porthole set that would probably still work if I plugged it in. I would tend to lean towards Zenith rather than stay away in terms of reliability.
I'll admit that I've studied schematics for RCA, Dumont and Andrea, and find that they are well-designed--many with 4 and 5 pix IF stages, elaborate AGC circuitry and all that.
There are rave reviews and horror stories associated with every brand, I'm sure.
