A few other ideas...

Unless you have a good way of remembering where each tube goes,
remove them only one at a time.

You will find that these tubes have anywhere from 4 to 7 pins at the base.
Two pins are somewhat bigger than the rest. In order to insert the tube
properly in its socket, you must locate the two holes that are bigger.
