Julian, I was very surprised to read in your post that loopstick antenna coils are no longer manufactured. These coils were, at one time, very popular in transistor radios and even mounted on the back covers of expensive stereo hi-fi receivers. [QUOTE]
Let me reword this a little. They are no longer manufactured and stocked like they were 30 or more years ago. However some new equipment may require this type of part and it would have to be made on special order or inhouse of the factory making the product. But your local parts jobber won't be carrying them and many other parts for that matter. It would then have to be special ordered. Today, anything made up of any copper is thoroughly revisited. (meaning how can we make it cheaper if we even need it at all?)
As long as they are kept dry, they will survive for many, many decades as they don't deteriorate like many modern plastics and the wire is good for a lot longer.
My local parts house has deleted most of the parts we WERE accustomed to seeing stocked. They have mostly become a computer parts place such as CAT/5 cable and such. The other day I walked in and expected to find an "L" pad. Guess what? Let alone not have one, the new guys didn't even know what it was!
I still need an 8 ohm L pad.
