I'm interested! what sort of beam viewers?

Let me guess: IR laser beams? - Power?

Are you using Y2O2S:Eu, the standard P-22 Red phosphor?

A few years ago, Radio-Shack sold an IR viewer plastic strip to test remote controls. Works quite well in the dark, a few inches away.
