The hot wire or hair dryer are used to delaminate (heat up) the plastic layer that bonds the outer safety glass to the acutal face of the tube. This plastic layer gets funky with age and begins to seperate....that's the cataract you see. I've got a CT16 that needs this same operation, if I ever get my buttocks into gear.
